At last night’s meeting, Oakville’s Town Council approved Official Plan Amendment 78 (OPA 78), advancing updated housing policies in the Livable Oakville Plan to support the Town’s current and future housing needs.
OPA 78 ensures Oakville’s Official Plan is aligned with Ontario’s evolving housing legislation while Council and staff continue to protect the core principles of the Livable Oakville Plan, including neighbourhood stability, local character, and directing growth to the Town’s Strategic Growth Areas.
OPA 78 builds on recent housing work already shared with the community, including the Town’s Housing Strategy and Action Plan and Housing Needs Assessment. It brings that work into the Official Plan, ensuring housing remains a key consideration when planning decisions are made.
Advancing housing policy
The amendment introduces a new Housing section in the Livable Oakville Plan with clear goals to:
- Support a range of housing types
- Encourage livable, complete communities
- Protect rental housing
- Support affordability over the long term
The updated policies were informed by public and stakeholder engagement, including consultation on a draft amendment and a statutory public meeting. Feedback helped refine the final policies brought forward for Council’s approval.
